Stainless Steel Cladding: 50 Years Ahead of Its Time

In 1973, Enfield Council made a very bold move in architecture by specifying Rimex stainless steel for the entire cladding envelope to its Civic Centre. As Sales Director of Rimex Metals, I take great pride in this project, which completely transformed the appearance of a municipal building. We used AISI 316 6WL stainless steel, which was a daring choice at the time. Most public buildings of the era had concrete, brick, or stone façades with the emphasis being on short-term functionality rather than aesthetics or durability.

Fifty years on, this ground-breaking installation showcases stainless steel's lasting beauty and strength. Its exterior, untouched by cleaning since installation, still captivates the eye, challenging the usual ageing process of building materials. The cladding features a 6WL pattern, creating a wave-like texture that boosts visual appeal. This design also helps conceal the natural patina that forms over time, keeping the surface looking pristine. With its self-cleaning properties and the corrosion-resistance of grade 316 stainless steel, this solution has proven highly cost-effective throughout the building's life.

Today, stainless steel cladding is common in buildings. Yet, Enfield Civic Centre stands out as a pioneer, demonstrating how innovative materials can create a lasting legacy.

The Centre's timeless elegance isn't just about aesthetics; it stands as a strong example of sustainable architecture, ahead of its time in environmental care. The Enfield Civic Centre project requires no maintenance and has a long design life whilst the stainless steel is 100% recyclable, demonstrating that clever material choices offer both striking visuals and lasting practical benefits.
